BlackBerry WebWorks

Developers who want to support both existing smartphones (running BlackBerry 6 and BlackBerry 7 OS) and BlackBerry PlayBook tablets can monetize apps on both platforms today with BlackBerry WebWorks, which supports apps built on HTML5, CSS and JavaScript. The latest release, BlackBerry WebWorks SDK 2.2 (supporting both smartphones and tablets), is now available and includes updates for the new PlayBook OS SDK, PlayBook Simulator and more.

The BlackBerry WebWorks APIs are supported by the Ripple Emulator, a standalone, high-fidelity browser-like emulation tool that allows developers to test and debug their applications on multiple platforms and devices without having to compile or launch simulators. Starting today the Ripple Emulator is available in beta and can also be downloaded from RIM’s WebWorks Developer site at: http://developer.blackberry.com/html5

BlackBerry

BlackBerry is a line of mobile e-mail and smart phone devices developed and designed by Canadian company Research In Motion (RIM) since 1999.

BlackBerry phones function as a digital assistant and  media player. They are primarily known for their ability to send and receive Internet e-mail wherever mobile network service coverage is present, or through Wi-Fi connectivity. They support a large array of instant messaging features, including BlackBerry Messenger.

BlackBerry commands a 11.7% share of worldwide smartphone sales, making it the fourth most popular device manufacturer after Google, Nokia, and Apple. The consumer BlackBerry Internet Service is available in 91 countries worldwide on over 500 mobile service operators using various mobile technologies. As of October 2011, there were seventy million subscribers worldwide to BlackBerry.

Modern GSM-based BlackBerry handhelds incorporate an ARM 7, 9 or ARM 11 processor, while older BlackBerry 950 and 957 handhelds used Intel 80386 processors.

The latest GSM BlackBerry models (9100, 9300 and 9700 series) have an Intel PXA930 624 MHz processor, 256 MB (or 4 GB in the Torch 9800) flash memory and 256 MB SDRAM.

CDMA BlackBerry smartphones are based on Qualcomm MSM6x00 chipsets which also include the ARM 9-based processor and GSM 900/1800 roaming (as the case with the 8830 and 9500) and include up to 256MB flash memory.

The CDMA Bold 9650 is the first to have 512MB flash memory for applications. All BlackBerrys after OS 5 support up to 32 GB micro SD cards.

Opena iPhone Case

- You can do a lot with an iPhone these days — text, take pictures, surf the net, and even make a phone call.

And soon, thanks to two Australian entrepreneurs, you will be able use it to open a bottle of beer by way of the “Opena,” a hard plastic case that fits over the iPhone and is equipped with a slide-out bottle opener.

“Basically, Australians are fairly heavy drinkers, as you may or may not know,” said Melbourne-based Chris Peters, an industrial designer who developed the product with Rob Ward, a former toolmaker.

“We’re always out at friends’ houses and so on, and in some cases you may not have your keys on you… So we thought, why don’t we attach a bottle opener to an iPhone case? We always have our phones on us.”

Working from three basic rules — the case had to be slim, there had to be no chance of the opener scratching the iPhone, and the opener had to work without putting any pressure on the phone — the two developed a prototype.

Testing including running through what a promotional video termed “the worst case scenario” in which a friend has shaken up the beer and it foams over. The case — and the iPhone — came through unscathed every time.

Aside from a few initial glitches because the first prototypes were too weak, development went smoothly. Start-up funding via an internet site that allows anybody to pitch in, has also gone well, enabling a sales launch within weeks.

“The strangest thing that happened was when we were doing the filming for the video and we had a courier drop off a parcel,” Peters said.

“He gave us some very unusual looks when we had about 20 open beers at seven in the morning.”

Though some who posted on the pair’s Facebook page expressed doubt about the wisdom of putting a phone that close to a foaming beverage, the response was mainly positive.

“Finally I can combine my love of drinking and tech,” one said.
